Valkey (https://valkey.io/) is an open source (https://github.com/valkey-io/valkey), high-performance in-memory database and a BSD-licensed fork of Redis (/en-US/services/Redis/benefits), backed by the Linux Foundation. It was created in 2024 after "Redis Inc.", the company behind Redis, moved Redis to a license that was no longer considered open source. Redis later returned to open source under the AGPLv3 license (Redis 8, 2025). Valkey keeps the permissive BSD license that Redis historically used, is driven by a strong open source community, and can directly and transparently replace Redis.
